Orie
Orie was rescued from the Cedar Livestock Market... only one horse trader was bidding against us, hoping to flip him at the next sale. I knew Orie wasn't as old as most of our rescues, but his eyes were in terrible condition. We rescued him and discovered he had an impressive background as a rope horse, but when his sight decline, he was thrown away. He will be having his right eye removed and is on steroid antibiotic ointment for his right eye to preserve the little sight he has left, he is the sweetest boy!

Bea
We noticed Bea at one of our smaller, local auctions. She had multiple kids riding her with a stick in their hand, doing exactly as she was told with no fight. Her previous owner had said they bought her from that exact auction 2 years prior, and didn't have use for her anymore. This poor, sweet, old lady deserved sanctuary. We are so lucky she is with us now!

Levi
Lila & Levi are a bonded pair who had been working ranch horses their entire lives! When they reached 26 and 27 years old, they could no longer keep up with the long, tiring days, so were being taken to the Billings Livestock Auction. We luckily were able to intercept them before going through the sale, allowing them to stay together and find sanctuary with us for the rest of their lives!

Mork
Mork was our first true owner surrender! He was a working mule that was featured in moves and shows for the History Channel! His owner loved him dearly, but when his wife received a cancer diagnosis, they knew they wanted more for Mork. He is about 95% blind, seeing some shadows in his right eye. Fanny Mae is his seeing-eye & emotional support donkey!

Agnes
Agnes was rescued with Sawyer. During quarantine her and Mags grew extremely close after Hank has passed away. She was a little underweight but aside from that, seemed healthy. A couple weeks after arriving to quarantine she started declining. She was diagnosed with Bastard Strangles, which had cause her fever to spike over 105. She was hospitalized to be put on fluids and antibiotics, and sadly passed on her own when her body could no longer keep fighting.

Species: Horse
Date of Passing: July 2025Sawyer
We rescued Sawyer from shipping to slaughter. He worked for the Amish for over two decades, and was discarded with his feet in terrible condition and completely emaciated when he could no longer do a full day's work. He has slowly gained weight back and is doing well retired in sanctuary!

Rescue Date: June 2025
Species: Horse
Magnolia (Mags)
Mags was originally rescued by ASIAB, out of the direct ship to slaughter pen even though she was pregnant. She and one of our former rescues, Hank, became inseparable during quarantine. We adopted her so they could retire together. She now lives at our Montana location, on grass pasture as we awaiting the birth of her foal!

Species: Horse
Lance
We came across Lance covered in mud standing in a direct ship to slaughter pen. Lance was just a baby, dropped off by the Amish after having put shoes on his front hooves to try to get him to work regardless of the pain he was in. He had a broken pelvis, along with issues from his hocks down to his fetlocks. We rescued him from slaughter and he was immediately taken to the emergency clinic. He received pain medication, a warm bath, grain and hay. Unfortunately, his x-rays and exam showed there was nothing we could do for this poor baby Belgian. He was humanely euthanized.

Date of Passing: May 2025Huey
Huey was found at the Bowie Livestock Auction in TX by another rescue after having been trampled by a trailer load full of draft horses for who knows how many hours. ASIAB and Project Barnyard teamed up to get Huey out of there and help him with his pain, swelling and extensive injuries. Just two hours before his vet appointment at Outlaw Equine Veterinary Hospital, he passed away at the auction house. Huey’s glass heart hangs in our Passing Tree… he may not have officially made it out of there, but we were there for him, and hope he knew he was loved.

Date of Passing: May 2025Iris
We rescued Iris from the same auction as Bonnie and Clyde. Her scars tell the story of the past, all of the grueling work she endured with the Amish. When they said “she just can’t work like she used to”, she was sold to be slaughtered. She is close to thirty years old, and has spent the entirety of her life working, used and abused. But now? She knows only love, care, affection and loyalty as she roams a 4+ acre pasture with her herd which she is the boss of. She is the most gentle, kind, captivating soul.
Birth Date: 1998
Rescue Date: April 2025
Species: Horse
Clyde
Clyde was rescued with Bonnie as a bonded mule pair. Saved from slaughter, we hoped they both would be able to retire here together. The Amish had worked him so hard, for so long he had changes in his hocks and stifles that were not fixable. We manually got him up from his laying down position daily, and after 5 days once he began to relax and settle and the adrenaline wore off, his body gave out. He was euthanized comfortably with Bonnie watching over him.
Birth Date: 2000
Rescue Date: April 2025
Species: Mule
Date of Passing: April 2025Bonnie
Bonnie was rescued from shipping to slaughter. She and Clyde had worked for the Amish pulling heavy farm equipment for over two decades. As they got older and “could no longer do a full day’s work”, they were sold to be slaughtered. Bonnie and Clyde were traded through two other auctions on their way from the East Coast to Texas. And by the time Bonnie was rescued, she had pleuropneumonia and struggled to breathe. She was on antibiotics three times a day and was hospitalized, but sadly after 22 days of fighting, her lungs were too compromised and she was humanely euthanized.

Date of Passing: May 2025Lago
Lago is not our typical rescue. He was a horse from my childhood that I found out was still alive after all this time! His owners had retired him and had done so much for me growing up, I could not think of a better place for him to be than here with us. His owners are who introduced me to horses and taught me everything I know, without them, Project Barnyard would not exist. Lago still looks and acts like a baby and loves to play chase. He will live out the rest of his days alongside Lucille who he has bonded to.

Walter
Walter was rescued out of the direct ship to slaughter pen in Bowie, TX. He had been ran through multiple auctions across the country prior to him ending up there. After his initial vet examination, it was evident he had endured a grueling work life. Despite that, he is one of the most personable rescues on the ranch. He will always walk up to receive love, scratches and treats. After gaining some much needed weight back, he lives comfortably and peacefully out on the pasture!

Gertie
Gertie was rescued out of the direct ship to slaughter pen in Bowie, TX. Shortly after being rescued, the auction sickness took over. We treated her with three rounds of IV antibiotics with no improvement. When she continued to decline, we discovered she was suffering from heart failure. Poor Gertie was just too far gone... she was humanely euthanized after a few days of having a full belly and clean shavings to rest in.

Date of Passing: January 2025Bodie
Bodie, Bodine, Boudini, Bodie Man, BoBo... this horse as changed our rescue for the better. When Bodie went through the auction ring, he was a perfect horse for the rider who was treating him terribly. The second he was bought he limped out and was thrown back in a pen. Easton and I walked around to the back and found the buyers and overhead their plans for him, and I just couldn't take it. After almost an hour of negotiation and begging, he was safe. He has OCD in his hocks, severe arthritis and scar tissue damage and needs injections 3-4 times a year and daily pain management. Despite all of that, Bodie is the brightest light with the biggest personality... always playing, escaping pastures and stalls, opening gates, and snoring while sleeping.

Maisy & Olive
Maisy and Olive were dumped at an auction and when the auction house asked whether they wanted them sold together or separately, the previous owner said "whatever brings in the most money". Baby Olive was just a couple months old, if that, and still nursing. Mama Maisy did everything to protect and stay with her baby during the stressful auction. Now, they will live the rest of their lives together in a sanctuary, never separated from one another.

Nebo
Nebo was rescued by Rescue Ranchito, a mustang focused equine rescue just north of us. Shortly after discovering he was a senior, we teamed up to give Nebo sanctuary here with us. We often call him "Eeyore" because of how slow and mopey he moves around the pasture. However, he is playful, snuggly and just wants to be in your pocket! He suffers from ringbone on both of his fronts, so is living out his days grazing with Eleanor as long as he is comfortable.

Gregory
Gregory (left) was our old man mule. Tracing his brand, we discovered the scars on his back were from being a packing mule for mountain lion hunting trips… Having worked all his life, he was always a stiff and are guy. I called him our "bulldozer", as he would back his booty up to you or another animal when he was wanting someone out of the way. His arthritis in his hocks became too painful for him and he was no longer able to get himself up from laying down. We helped him pass peacefully as his herd surrounded him.

Date of Passing: March 2025Merlin
Merlin... this poor baby broke my heart. He was at the Bowie, TX August auction. I was walking past his pen and saw him suffocating, gasping for air. I ran to the office to see who owned him and it took hours before they got ahold of the trader who had bought him. We were able to save him and rush him to Outlaw Vet Hospital. Fluid had filled his lungs and he was too far gone... too young and too sick. He was euthanized then.

Piper was rescued out of the direct ship pen from Bowie, TX along with Prue and Phoebe. The three of them together made up the "charmed sisters" from the February 2024 auction. As you can see in her photo, her neck had been horribly injured prior to being dropped off at the auction. It was limiting her ability to eat correctly and more importantly, was negatively affecting her quality of life. Piper enjoyed a few weeks of pain medication, treats, space and time before she was peacefully laid to rest.

After a storm one night, he began to colic. We had our vet out for hours and later transported him to our nearest emergency clinic. He fought that entire night and came home three days later. He went to another equine rescue in norhtern Utah and now lives with a foster who renamed him Rex.

He passed peacefully under a pink sky sunset while Lucille and Roman watched over him.
